PURPOSE: To recommend the appointment of Shakima Tozay to the Snohomish County Children’s Commission.
BACKGROUND: The Children’s Commission was created to advise the County on “issues of health, safety and social services for infants, young children and youth in the community.” It is composed of 25 members, including at least two youth commissioners. Three members are appointed from each council district, while the remaining ten at-large appointees may reside anywhere within the county. Commissioners serve four-year terms with the exception of youth commissioners, who serve one-year terms. Commissioners may not serve more than three consecutive terms. The Snohomish County Children’s Commission currently has 8 members and 17 vacancies
• Ms. Tozay resides in Council District 1
• Ms. Tozay is currently a Licensed Independent Medial Social Worker, working with military families
• Ms. Tozay has expertise in perinatal mental health
• Ms. Tozay specializes in the maternal health crisis and its impact on the BIPOC community
• Ms. Tozay is not a member of any other County committee or council
• Ms. Tozay is recommended for an initial four-year term upon appointment
