DEPARTMENT: Sheriff
ORIGINATOR: Lynda Thomas
EXECUTIVE RECOMMENDATION: Approval
PURPOSE: : To secure continued funding for the Snohomish County Auto Theft Task Force through WASPC and WATPA
BACKGROUND: In 2007 the Washington State Legislature passed House Bill 1001. Among other things, the Legislation created the Washington Auto Theft Prevention Authority (WATPA) for the purpose of assisting local governments in proactively dealing with auto theft. Funding comes from a percentage of a $10.00 surcharge added to traffic infractions issued statewide. WATPA has awarded funds to form an Auto Theft Task Force in Snohomish County from 2008 to June 30, 2025. A competitive grant program announcement calling for applications for the fiscal year July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2027 has been issued by WATPA . This grant application proposes the continuation of and enhancement to the Snohomish County Auto Theft Task Force, a multi-agency education and enforcement entity. The application is being made by the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office and also on behalf the Snohomish County Prosecutor's Office, the City of Arlington Police Department and the City of Marysville Police Department. No matching funds are required. Cost for the Task Force will be reimbursed by WATPA.
