PURPOSE: The Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) has funding available to assist local jurisdictions with the enforcement of solid waste codes and monitoring of solid waste facilities for compliance. Snohomish County, through its Health Department, is charged with the monitoring and enforcement of solid waste facilities for compliance with solid waste laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.
BACKGROUND: The goal of the DOE Local Solid Waste Financial Assistance program is to protect human health and the environment by preventing and correcting solid waste violations through technical assistance and education, compliance monitoring and enforcement when necessary. DOE works with local jurisdictions to provide regional solutions and intergovernmental cooperation; prevent or minimize environmental contamination through planning and project implementation; and comply with state and local solid and hazardous waste management plans and laws.
