PURPOSE: To consider approving a motion of the Snohomish County Council to appoint a nominee to fill a vacant councilmember position in County Council District 3 that resulted from Stephanie Wright's resignation.
BACKGROUND: Stephanie Wright resigned as councilmember from District 3 on August 29, 2022. The term of office expires on 12/31/2023. Ms. Wright's resignation caused a vacancy for an unexpired term; she affiliated with the Democrat Party at the time of her resignation from elected office. By the Washington Constitution and Snohomish County Charter, the Democrat Party presents three (3) nominees, of which the County Council must appoint one to serve. If the Council does not appoint a nominee within 60 days, the Governor shall appoint from a list of nominees. To fill the vacancy, the Party nominated Carin Chase, Strom Peterson and Colin McMahon. Council office sent questions to the nominees on September 23, 2022 with a request for written answers by September 26, 2022. The intent is to interview the nominees in person on September 29, 2022. The appointee shall serve until the certification of the 2023 general election at which point the person elected shall serve the remainder of the unexpired term (to 12/31/2023). A motion will be made for the appointee followed by an amendment to add the name of the nominee. The appointee may take and sign the oath of office at the special meeting on 9/29/2022.
