PURPOSE: Provide update on the 2024 revised Washington State Bar Association Indigent Defense Standards and its impact on Snohomish County OPD
BACKGROUND: In March of 2024, the WSBA revised the Indigent Defense Standards, including public defense caseload standards. Pursuant to RCW 10.101.030, the WSBA has the responsibility to provide these guidelines to be used by local jurisdictions in adopting their own standards for public defense. These Standards are now professional standards of practice and will be the minimum standards contractually allowed without public defense lawyers falling out of compliance. These revised Standards take effect in July of 2025 and will be phased in over four years. This presentation will provide a background of the Standards and how they impact Snohomish County.
