Title

Motion 24-490, approving a contract between Alderwood Counseling Associates and Snohomish County for the provision of secondary trauma training and counseling

body

DEPARTMENT:  Prosecuting Attorney

ORIGINATOR:  Ellen Hagey

EXECUTIVE RECOMMENDATION:  Ken Klein 11/21/24

PURPOSE: To provide training and on-demand counseling services to deputy prosecuting attorneys, advocates, and staff.

BACKGROUND: In the course of performing their duties, deputy prosecutors, advocates, and staff employees regularly work with victims of primary trauma and can experience secondary trauma from repeated exposure to the suffering, pain, and distress of survivors and victims of violent crimes. The work of PAO employees necessarily requires the viewing of images, listening to recordings, watching videos, interviewing victims and witnesses, and surveying crime scenes that contain graphically disturbing and emotionally painful content, all of which can adversely impact heir mental health, their physical well-being, and their job performance. The purpose of this contract is to offer support services to our employees who find themselves challenged with processing such challenging circumstances and content. Trainings will be held on a quarterly basis and designed in consultation with the PAO. Counseling will be offered every other week, with employees scheduling their own appointments using a Google calendar. Counseling services are confidential and compliant with HIPAA. The contract is for $61,250, for 26 months (November 1, 2024, through December 31, 2026), unless mutually agreed to be extended.
