ITEM TITLE:

Title

Washington Association of Sheriffs & Police Chiefs (WASPC) - Grant Application for New Radar Equipment

body

DEPARTMENT:  Sheriff’s Office

ORIGINATOR:  Lynda Thomas

EXECUTIVE RECOMMENDATION:  Approved

PURPOSE: Executive approval of grant application: Washington Association of Sheriffs & Police Chiefs (WASPC) - Grant Application for New Radar Equipment

BACKGROUND: Traffic related fatalities continue to be an issue in Snohomish County.  The WSDOT crash data portal shows 59 fatalities and 208 serious injury crashes in 2025.  We have had 53 fatal and serious injury crashes that were speed related during that time.  This was a reduction from 2024, showing our efforts are making impacts, but we need additional equipment to increase our enforcement presence related to speed.  Our agency participates in Target Zero enforcement activities.  We supplement this with on-duty enforcement by our motors unit and our patrol units when they are not on calls for service.  SECTOR data shows during federal fiscal year 2025 our agency issued over 5300 infractions.  We have many deputies without radar equipment in their cars.  The radar equipment will be provided to traffic enforcement deputies to carry out our mission of enforcing speed laws to reduce serious injuries and crashes.  Dash mount radar equipment will be installed in deputy by our fleet installer.  Deputies who receive the equipment will have already had radar training, so no additional training should necessary.  If training is required, our training unit will ensure the deputies have what is needed to carry out proper use of the equipment.
