body
DEPARTMENT: Human Services

EXECUTIVE RECOMMENDATION: Approved by Lacey Harper 6/10/26

BACKGROUND: Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a cognitive behavioral treatment that was originally developed to treat chronically suicidal individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and it is now recognized as the gold standard psychological treatment for this population. In addition, research has shown that it is effective in treating a wide range of other disorders such as substance dependence, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders. As such, DBT is a transdiagnostic, modular treatment.
Provide two separate (2), three (3) day trainings on the implementation of DBT STEPS-A & E, a universal social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum for elementary/middle/high school students in educational settings, two groups of seventy five (75) individuals from across Snohomish County on two separate sessions, for a total of one hundred fifty (150) people, including school counselors, social workers, Student Support Advocates, and other appropriate District student facing staff or partner Agency staff. The DBT STEPS-A and E curriculum is designed to help adolescents develop coping strategies and decision-making abilities to use in school and into the future. The DBT STEPS-A and E curriculum is based on the skills of comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) that have shown to be effective with both adults and adolescents experiencing mild to severe levels of emotional and behavioral difficulties.
