PURPOSE: Washington Alliance for Better Schools’ (WABS’) Natural Leaders program is an equitable family engagement program that works specifically with BIPOC, immigrant, and refugee families - families that typically face linguistic, cultural, and systemic barriers to participation in their child’s education. Natural Leaders families learn how to navigate the US education system, develop leadership and advocacy skills, connect with their community, and address emergent topics relevant to their family and community in pursuit of equitable student outcomes. The program uses agrassroots, asset-based model to increase family engagement with schools and the community. Funding will support the critical and expanding need for interpretation at our program trainings and activities - there are often requests for interpretation in 5-10 different languages per session. Natural Leaders impacts approximately 15,000 parents, caregivers, and students each year in Snohomish County. Funding will support contracted services for needs such as interpretation and translation.
BACKGROUND: The Office of Social Justice has been directed to provide community investment funding to BIPOC non-profit organizations operating within Snohomish County.
