Title

Motion 21-226, confirming the reappointment of Desmond Pullen to the Snohomish County Children’s Commission

body

DEPARTMENT:  Human Services

ORIGINATOR:  Nicole McMurray

EXECUTIVE RECOMMENDATION:  Approve

PURPOSE: To recommend Desmond Pullen for reappointment to the Snohomish County Children’s Commission, to serve a third four-year term, representing District 5 - Youth Services.

BACKGROUND: The Children’s Commission was created to advise the County on “issues of health, safety and social services for infants, young children and youth in the community.”  It is composed of  25 members, including at least two youth commissioners.  Three members are appointed from each council district, while the remaining ten at-large appointees may reside anywhere within the county.  Commissioners serve four-year terms with the exception of youth commissioners, who serve one-year terms. The Snohomish County Children’s Commission currently has 13 members (12 plus the pending reappointment of Mr. Pullen) and 12 vacancies.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        On May 26, 2021, the Children’s Commission met and discussed the reappointment of Desmond Pullen, representing District 5 - Youth Services. This would be Mr. Pullen’s third term on the commission. His second term expired May 31, 2021. With 45 years of experience working with children and their families, Mr. Pullen has developed a keen understanding of what is required for children’s safety, happiness and growth through his work in education and community advocacy.  In his practice as a teacher, he worked with children of diverse backgrounds and learning styles. As an administrator, he worked with families of different cultures to provide both support and advocacy. He also has significant experience coordinating programs with the larger community to provide healthy, safe activities for children. His experience developing teams is extensive.                                             Mr. Pullen is not a current member of any other Snohomish County board or commission.
