Conservation and Natural Resources - Contract with Ecogrind Site Solutions LLC
body
DEPARTMENT: Conservation and Natural Resources
ORIGINATOR: Toni Wilde
EXECUTIVE RECOMMENDATION: Approved
PURPOSE: A competitive Bid was issued for the Middle Pilchuck River Restoration Project that will reconnect the right bank historical floodplain to the Pilchuck River. The primary goal of the project is to increase and improve rearing, foraging and habitat.
BACKGROUND: This goal relates directly to the habitat deficiencies and geomorphic possibilities described in the 2012 Middle Pilchuck River Assessment reports (SWM 2012). The restoration design objectives for the Project include: 1) reconnecting the floodplain and encouraging new side channel formation through the existing floodplain to increase off-channel rearing, foraging, and overwintering habitat for native salmonids at various life stages; 2) promoting increased floodplain connection, thus dissipating energy during floods, improving groundwater and sediment exchange, and promoting riparian habitat wood recruitment potential; and 3) increasing in-channel habitat and channel complexity, providing hydraulic refugia for juvenile salmonids through additions of LWM in the main channel and on the floodplain.
