EXECUTIVE RECOMMENDATION: Approved
PURPOSE: Community Investment funding will be used to provide housing assistance to severely underserved and poor families living within Snohomish County. Evictions and utility service revocation are increasing among indigent families and funds will be made available to families with young children. Studies show that children in families experiencing housing stability thrive because they have a consistent environment where they can learn and grow, leading to better cognitive development and fewer behavioral issues, which impact the amount of resources schools, for example, have to spend on interventions. Moreover, children living in stable housing are more likely to attend school regularly and achieve higher academic success due to reduced stress and disruptions related to housing instability. Secure housing has also been shown to significantly reduce stress levels and improve overall mental well-being for both adults and children within a family.
BACKGROUND: The Office of Social Justice has been directed to provide community investment funding to BIPOC organizations operating within Snohomish County.
