PURPOSE: The Casino Road neighborhood is a densely populated, 4 square mile area home to around 20,000 people, located about 4 miles south of Everett's downtown core. Over half of all the households in Casino Road's zip code belong to families hoping to build a better life for their children. Casino Road is one of the most racially diverse neighborhoods of Snohomish County. Nearly 1 in 3 residents are foreign born, and 45% speak a language other than English at home. Investment funding will be used to pay for wellness and fitness training for residents. There will be two timeframes each week - one evening and one morning - to accommodate different families’ schedules, further increasing accessibility. The instructor is a bilingual member of the community, which breaks a language barrier for people who want to participate in fitness activities but may not speak English. It also increases people’s comfort with participating because the instructor is part of the Casino Road community.
BACKGROUND: The Office of Social Justice has been directed to provide community investment to BIPOC organizations operating within Snohomish County.
