Title
INTERGOVERNMENTAL SERVICES AGREEMENT BETWEEN SNOHOMISH COUNTY AND WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL DNA MONITORING
body
DEPARTMENT: Conservation and Natural Resources/SWM
ORIGINATOR: Connie Price
EXECUTIVE RECOMMENDATION: Approved
PURPOSE: Approve Intergovernmental Agreement with WDFW for Environmental DNA Monitoring
BACKGROUND: In 2017, the County started the State of Our Waters program, an environmental health monitoring program involving the collection of biological, physical, and chemical data from waterways in Snohomish County. In 2025 and 2026, Snohomish County Surface Water Management (SWM) will continue assessing fish use of streams and rivers as part of the State of Our Waters program. The overall goal of this program is to determine the condition of waterways throughout the County by measuring water quality, habitat, flow, and land use change at a randomized set of sites each year. By incorporating eDNA, the presence of fish within and upstream of stream reaches can be efficiently determined with no impact on the stream biota. The WDFW Molecular Genetics Laboratory (WDFW-MGL) will extract and analyze water filters to determine which species’ DNA are present.
