Community Investment for Snohomish County Public Defender’s Association

EXECUTIVE RECOMMENDATION: Approved
PURPOSE: SCPDA will use this funding to support sending 5 defenders to the National Association of Public Defense Racial Justice Conference in Montgomery, Alabama from October 28 to 31, 2024. The conference is designed to challenge defenders and defender organizations to consider three areas that impact their pursuit of justice for clients of color: (1) how they as individuals approach race, (2) how public defender offices address race in their workplaces, and how to effectively litigate racial issues. The conference includes visits to the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. These experiences provide opportunities to investigate America’s history of racial injustice and its legacy. These experiences are designed to promote connections between current impacts and the histories memorialized in these spaces.
BACKGROUND: The Office of Social Justice has been directed to provide funding in support of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts within Snohomish County.
