Authorized Emergency Vehicle Permit Application Renewal - WSP
body
DEPARTMENT: Public Works

ORIGINATOR: Taushka Radonski

EXECUTIVE RECOMMENDATION: Approved

PURPOSE: Obtain signature approval on Authorized Emergency Vehicle Permit Application (AEVP) for submittal to Washington State Patrol to authorize nine (9) Snohomish County Public Works Road Maintenance vehicles with emergency equipment for use in road related emergent situations.

BACKGROUND: Snohomish County Public Works Road Maintenance has nine vehicles that are on-call 24/7 and are equipped with hardware to close county roads and establish detours. These closures may be requested by law enforcement or initiated to mitigate emergency issues such as downed power lines and flooding. Red and amber colored lights and audible warning devices have been installed on these vehicles per the requirements under RCW 46.37.190, WAC 204-36-50, WAC 204-21-130, and WAC 204-21-140. This equipment is needed to command the attention of the traveling public to protect them and the emergency response personnel during traffic control operations. The Washington State Patrol grants emergency vehicle permits in order to operate the emergency lighting on these vehicles while on county roadways. RCW 46.37.320, WAC 204-36-030 and WAC 204-36-060 outline the requirements and procedures to submit this renewal application. The current authorized emergency vehicle permits expire February 19, 2026. Road Maintenance has a policy to establish guidance on the authorized use of emergency lights and sirens for vehicles so equipped.
